On the occasion of World Animal Day, celebrated globally each year on October 4, Elnet Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture has produced a 10 minutes short documentary video which focuses on the status of working animal initiatives by different stakeholders, including the government and NGOs working in the country. The short video highlights the general welfare practices of working animals, basics of animal freedoms in Addis Ababa and its surrounding areas.
On the Ethiopian celebration, panelists from the Ministry of Agriculture, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and from the private sector discussed topics on the theme of the World Animal Day. In addition, major issues like animal welfare status in transportation and during slaughter was examined in light of the current practices in Ethiopia.
There was thorough interactive discussions between the panelists on the value of animals to humans, the care that should be taken for the animals and the attention of national policies. The celebration ended by visiting Addis Zoo Park in Addis Ababa.
