Human Safety & Dignity

Across our current areas of work, we remain committed to supporting vulnerable communities through practical and compassionate action. We are working to improve lives by addressing immediate needs while also creating long-term opportunities in areas such as education, maternal health, livelihoods, animal welfare, and environmental care.

Through these ongoing initiatives, we seek to strengthen dignity, wellbeing, and resilience for the people and communities we serve. Guided by our holistic approach, we believe meaningful and lasting change is possible when support is responsive, partnerships are strong, and the wellbeing of people, animals, and the environment is advanced together.

Projects

Dire Dawa City Administration School Feeding Project

Elnet Foundation, in partnership with Dire Dawa Development Association and relevant city bureaus, continues to support vulnerable students at Guguba Primary School through an ongoing school feeding project. The initiative provided daily meals to 500 children during the 2024/2025 school year and has continued through the 2025/2026 school year, helping improve nutrition, attendance, academic performance, and community participation in school feeding practice. Assessment findings also showed encouraging reductions in dropout and repetition rates, along with improvements in promotion rates and student scores.

The project was designed to improve the feeding status and overall wellbeing of vulnerable students by addressing hunger as a major barrier to learning.  Beyond daily feeding, the project also sought to strengthen the role of the school and surrounding community in creating a more supportive and sustainable environment for children’s education and health.

The impact has been both practical and measurable. A joint assessment found that school enrollment increased, dropout rates declined significantly, promotion rates improved, and average student scores rose significantly. The project also contributed to better classroom participation and retention, while supporting equal access to education for girls, who made up 55% of the student beneficiaries. Volunteers involved in the program also gained useful experience in the preparation of nutritious food for children, helping strengthen local ownership and sustainability.

Mobile Veterinary Clinic for Equines in Addis Ababa (MVC–ADEQs)

The Mobile Veterinary Clinic for Equines in Addis Ababa is the first project of its kind in Ethiopia, created to improve the welfare of working horses, donkeys, and mules that support livelihoods and urban transport. Operating across five sub-cities of Addis Ababa, the project delivers field-based veterinary treatment, humane response for severely sick and injured equines, public awareness, and technical support related to equine health and welfare. Its purpose is not only to reduce animal suffering, but also to protect the wellbeing and economic stability of the people who depend on these animals every day.

Since beginning field operations in 2025, the clinic has provided treatment to hundreds of equines and supported owners and community members through outreach and awareness activities. The project also uses social media and radio messaging to strengthen public understanding of equine welfare, responsible care, and the services available through the clinic. In addition, Elnet Foundation has worked with partners and relevant authorities to explore rehabilitation spaces and strengthen the systems needed to respond to abandoned, injured, and severely ill animals more effectively.

This initiative reflects Elnet Foundation’s broader holistic approach, recognizing that animal welfare is closely linked to human dignity, livelihoods, and responsible urban development. By bringing veterinary care directly to areas where working equines are active, the project helps meet urgent needs while also advancing a culture of compassion, better treatment, and long-term care for animals that are essential to many households and communities.

School Greening and Cleaning Initiatives

Elnet Foundation’s School Greening and Cleaning Initiatives are designed to create healthier, greener, and more engaging learning environments for students. Through tree planting, vegetable gardening, environmental clubs, school compound cleaning, and practical awareness activities, the initiative helps schools become spaces where environmental care is both taught and practiced. In 2025, these efforts reached schools in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, supporting greener compounds, cleaner surroundings, and stronger student participation in sustainability activities.

The initiative goes beyond beautification. It encourages students, teachers, and school communities to take shared responsibility for their environment through practical action. Tree seedlings, vegetable seeds, and gardening tools were provided to support school gardening, while environmental training and clean-up campaigns helped build awareness around waste management, sustainability, and the importance of caring for shared spaces. Environmental clubs also played an important role in strengthening student engagement and long-term ownership.

By combining greening and cleaning efforts, Elnet Foundation promotes a more holistic approach to school-based environmental care. These initiatives help improve school compounds, support practical learning, encourage healthier habits, and nurture a sense of responsibility among young people. They also reflect the Foundation’s broader commitment to restoring the environment through community participation, education, and small but meaningful action.
